President's Welcome

Vast space and low population are two factors that are favored by transportation engineers but they also present some challenges. Ranked as the second largest country by area and thirty seventh by population, Canada is increasing its investment in the transportation infrastructure. This is demonstrated by the different projects that are currently underway such as the Sea-to-Sky highway improvement, construction of William R. Bennet Bridge and the Gateway program.

The field of Transportation Engineering is exciting as it is rapidly developing. More and more students are attracted to the transportation sector because it offers more opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Safety and mobility are the main focus of transportation engineers especially with the population growth, the increase in the number of automobiles and more importantly economic growth. Transportation engineering is flexible in that it can be integrated with more than one industry and that is why there is an increase in the need for transportation engineers.

The objective of UBC ITE Student Chapter is to bring the industry closer to transportation engineering students so they get a sense of what to expect when they step out to practice their profession. There are a series of activities that will be held throughout the year such as guest lectures, workshops that are tailored to cater for the needs of graduates of transportation engineering and the traditional UBC ITE Industry Night.

Industry night is the main event of UBC ITE SC. It facilitates the connection between the transportation industry and students (undergraduate and graduate alike) through presentations given by students showcasing their academic progress. In addition, it presents the graduates with an opportunity to explore more options and meet potential employers.
